This piece is one of Tchaikovsky’s most famous compositions, and perhaps the most popular ballet in the world. Set designer Ernst Heidebrecht created a magic world of Hoffmann’s fairy tale, where old German cosiness and magic of the dreamland are joined together.

The story centers on a young girl’s Christmas Eve, her awakening to the wider world and romantic love and her favorite Christmas toy, the Nutcracker that comes alive and, after defeating the evil Mouse King in battle, whisks Marie away to a magical kingdom populated by dolls.
